Ha Long Bay Cruise Guide: Complete 1 Day Cruise Experience

Ha Long Bay Cruise

As I planned my journey to Hanoi in Vietnam, I was thinking about whether I should visit Ha Long Bay as well or not. If I had ended up missing Ha Long Bay because of this confusion, then I would have missed a place that tourists rarely missed unless they suffered from seasickness.

If you are planning Ha Long Bay from Hanoi, the day cruise is useful when you want to experience the major attractions without spending a night on the cruise. An overnight cruise can make more sense if you want the cruise itself to be a larger part of your trip.

Choosing Between Ha Long Bay Day Cruise vs Overnight Cruise

I was in Ha Long Bay for a cruise. It was a day cruise. First I thought I would go for a cruise with an overnight stay. I mean, I would go that day and return the next day. Later I decided on a day cruise, as most of the tourists went for that.

For someone staying in Hanoi, a day cruise can be a practical choice if the main objective is to see Ha Long Bay and its major attractions in one day.

An overnight cruise is better suited to travellers who want more time on the water and a slower experience.

Getting from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

After travelling for about 150 KM, I reached the Ha Long International Cruise Port. I needed to go into that building. That was where my cruise would depart. Basically, this was the lounge of Ambassador Cruise, with which I had booked my cruise. This was also called the “Sunworld Port.”

One important thing for a day cruise is to work backwards from the boarding time. Reaching Ha Long Bay late in the morning can mean missing part of the cruise itinerary.

Ha Long International Cruise Port and Boarding

I reached the boarding point from where the cruise would start. I saw at least 8-10 cruise ships standing next to each other. Nice! I thought my cruise ship was parked at the end, the Ambassador Cruise. All these were five-star cruise ships. I had researched the luxury cruises available here.

Ha Long Bay Cruise

I checked the availability. Eventually, I booked the Ambassador Cruise for myself. I was on the second floor of the cruise. I had been allotted a table to sit upon. Additionally, I had been given this itinerary. The boarding time was 8.00 AM. The cruise would leave at 9.00 AM. Breakfast would be served right then, and this itinerary went on till 4.00 PM.

My cruise-day schedule

The itinerary I received was essentially a full-day programme:

  • 8:00 AM — Boarding
  • 9:00 AM — Cruise departure
  • Breakfast
  • Ha Long Bay cruise
  • Sung Sot Cave
  • Ti Top Island
  • Lunch
  • Bamboo boat/kayaking activity
  • Cooking class
  • Return to the harbour around 4:00 PM

The exact order and timing can vary depending on the cruise and operating conditions, so I would recommend checking the itinerary when booking.

The last activity was “Enjoy the Cooking Class” from 3.00 to 4.00 PM. Between 4.00 and 4.15 PM, I would be back at the Ha Long International Cruise Port. The number of people on the deck above was almost double the number of people on the lower level.

I could bring my breakfast up there and enjoy it.

Breakfast on the Halong Bay Cruise

Breakfast was one of the first parts of the cruise experience.

This was vegetarian Pho. As it was written there, “Pho Chay”, where chay meant vegetarian. It had noodles, broccoli, carrot, and tofu for vegetarian eaters. For non-vegetarians, there was chicken. It had rice noodles in it. I decided to eat the chicken soup. Pho was available in veg and non-veg options. However, the veg soup was different.

The cruise departure and breakfast timings were as per the itinerary. Whenever Indian tourists visited there in groups of 5 or 10, the cruises also served Indian food for meals. Very good taste! In the past few days, I had seen that the soup there was also a bit bland, so I needed to add salt to it.

But this one was good. Of all the soups that I had tried during my Vietnam journey, this was the best. Very good preparation!

Food tip: If you are travelling with Indian family members or friends, food availability is worth checking with the cruise before booking. In my experience, Indian food options were also available.

Private Room on a Day Cruise

I was there to see the stay accommodation on this cruise. This was one of the rooms. If I wanted to book a private room for myself, even on a day cruise, if I didn’t want to sit for longer hours or needed some privacy, they had rooms available in two different categories. For the two categories, charges were 1.6 million and 1.8 million Dong. That was approximately between Rs 5000-5300. So, I could book a room like this from 9.30 AM to 3.30 PM. For me, the most amazing part of this room was this private balcony. I might have got the same experience from the deck as well, but not with the same privacy.

Is a private room worth it?

For me, the biggest advantage was the private balcony.

If you are comfortable spending most of the cruise on the common deck, you may not need one. But if you want privacy, somewhere to rest, or a quieter place during the cruise, a day-use room can be an option.

Cruising Through Ha Long Bay

Those were actually called Islets were at different distances from each other. This was a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All the rock formations were made of limestone. The presence of such limestone formations in the sea was a big thing in itself.

Ha Long Bay Cruise

The landscape is one of the main reasons to take the cruise. The limestone formations rising from the water are what make the scenery of Ha Long Bay so distinctive.

There was no doubt about it. On this cruise, I could also choose journeys for different durations like 1N2D or 2N3D. There were basically many cruise operators who worked in this industry. In fact, Ambassador Cruise was one of the 20-25 operators working in the luxury cruise segment. So, I had a lot of options to choose from.

Dinner Cruise as Another Option

I returned to the harbor at 4.00 PM. At 5.00 PM, the ship started another check-in for the dinner cruise. The dinner cruise departed at 6.00 PM. That returned to the harbor at 8.45 PM. For a short journey, the dinner cruise was also an attractive option. On this cruise, I had to pay for the drinking water.

I bought this 750 ml water bottle for 125,000 Dong.

This is useful to keep in mind because drinks and other extras may not necessarily be included in the cruise price.

Sung Sot Cave

I then reached near the Cave. I went there after having water. I went there in smaller boats. These small boats took me to the cave. It was a nice experience! I was then closer to these islets, which had been far from me just a while earlier. The name of this cave was Sung Sot Cave.

I walked towards the cave while looking out at the sea. This cave had a narrow entrance.

But once I entered, it opened up considerably. There were some amazing limestone formations inside the cave. Wow! Whenever I got to visit such limestone caves, it felt nice to look at these formations that had been in the making for millions of years. These pillars had been built drop by drop.

These formations were actually called Stalactites, formed of water droplets falling from the roof. It took millions of years to make pillars such as this one. This was the main attraction of this cave. To witness these unique formations inside the cave! Some of these formations were really unique.

The formations next to it were also really unique. I checked out that section of the cave and then moved on.

I looked at it from bottom to top, and it was such a unique formation! All this was limestone! This whole area of the cave looked so beautiful! The cruise didn’t provide any guide service on this part of the tour. I just kept walking and looking. I found such marvellous backdrops inside the limestone cave.

From there, I walked ahead and exited from that opening. Overall, this was the largest cave I had visited till that date.

What to know before visiting Sung Sot Cave

Expect walking and some uneven sections. Comfortable footwear is therefore a good idea.

The cave is also one of the more active parts of the itinerary, so if you prefer a slow-paced trip, keep in mind that a day cruise involves several activities one after another.

Ti Top Island

I travelled on a boat for 10-15 minutes after leaving the limestone caves. They brought me to the Ti Top Island. This island was named thus after a Russian astronaut. He visited this island in 1962. The island was then renamed in his honour. Tourists could indulge in two types of activities there.

I could either spend about 30 minutes down at the beach, swimming or just sitting idle. As for the second choice, I could climb up the mountain and enjoy a 360-degree view from up there. I didn’t feel like going for a swim at that time. I needed to climb 450 steps to reach the top.

Ti Top Island

Ti Top Island: Beach or viewpoint?

This was one of the most important choices I had to make during the cruise.

If you want to climb to the viewpoint, you need to allow enough time for the stairs and for enjoying the view at the top.

If you prefer swimming or relaxing, you can stay around the beach.

I had to say this. If I kept looking down after every 50 steps or so, I motivated myself to carry on. It felt good, right? I climbed about 250 steps in one go and then became breathless.

So there was hustle and bustle on these islands throughout the day. I was thinking that I had been given 30 minutes to visit this island. What if someone got delayed? What if someone ended up spending 45 minutes instead of 30? Those people must not be left behind. Anyways, I was mindful of the time personally.

I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get late in returning to the ship and didn’t keep others waiting. For then, I was breathless!

Finally, I was on top. Ohhooo! My God! As they had conveyed in the description, I was watching a 360-degree view of the Bay.

I had seen rivers and lakes many times from a height. I’ve also seen the sea from a height, but not as many times. I knew the difference in this view, other than the fact that I was at a height. Looking at all these islets from there was a one-of-its-kind experience! I didn’t think I would get to see this view anywhere again.

This was a special moment that could only be captured with my eyes. I was not sure if I would get such an opportunity again. The colour of the water looked green. I had good visibility that day. Many times, I wasn’t able to see a clear image of the view in the distance. But I could myself look far off with my eyes.

The islets were only adding to the beauty of this view. Amazing!

As I reached the beach, I felt that if I had brought along my costume, I could have enjoyed being in the water for a bit. I mean, I could have gone for a light swim. But the point was that I couldn’t do both activities in the limited time at my disposal.

I could either climb the mountain or enjoy it down there. Being down there was also a good experience, primarily because of the clean beachside. The water was so clear that I could look across it. No doubt, it was an experience in itself.

My advice for Ti Top Island

If you want the viewpoint, prioritise the climb.

If you want a relaxed experience, stay at the beach.

Trying to do both during a short stop can make the visit feel rushed. I personally chose the viewpoint.

Lunch on the Ha Long Bay Cruise

They started serving lunch. But I had to wait for my turn.

I got seafood fried rice with steamed vegetables and grilled chicken. One thing I liked there was that they also offered options in Indian food. It was good! I liked it. Although it was a bit warm to sit outside, I could also enjoy the sea view with it. It was fun to have lunch like this.

While travelling in Vietnam, I had seen that lotus root was a popular vegetable. For instance, this grilled chicken was also cooked with lotus root. The food quality was good! I also liked the breakfast that morning.

Food experience of Halong Bay Cruise

The cruise gave me the opportunity to try both Vietnamese-style food and Indian options. If food is an important part of your trip, checking the available meal options before booking would be useful.

Bamboo Boat Ride and Kayaking on Halong Bay Cruise

I was shifted to another boat from the cruise. I then went for a bamboo boat ride. I was busy with one activity after another, so I didn’t feel bored.

Kayaking on Halong Bay Cruise

Once I was done with lunch, it was time to go for the bamboo boat ride. All the cruise ships operating in this area had, more or less, similar itineraries. There might have been slight differences, but the majority of the itinerary was similar.

They had given me a band to wear on the wrist. With that, they had also told me which gate I had to go through. My bamboo boat ride began. They rowed it like a normal boat. I could see that the tourists who knew kayaking were enjoying in their kayaks. But those, like me, who didn’t know kayaking well, were navigating within a smaller area.

I went towards Hang Luan. It was going to be a great experience! It was beautiful! By the way, this was an exciting part of my journey. I took the sea route to travel beneath the cave. It was an amazing cave!

Vietnamese Spring Roll Cooking Class

After watching the live performance on the deck, I came down to the third level.

At the third level, they were teaching how to cook the famous Vietnamese spring rolls. I had seen how popular the rice-paper spring rolls were in Vietnam. As they showed the step-by-step recipe, a large number of ladies watched with interest. Once the spring rolls were deep-fried and ready, tourists could serve themselves for a taste.

I also tasted the spring rolls. I then found out that they were also selling sushi there, which was being prepared live. I had seen that even Japanese food was quite popular in Vietnam.

Nice taste! I knew what the best part of this spring roll was? The awesome taste of the stuffing inside.

It had no spices at all, but I could taste the real flavour of mushrooms, mixed with carrot and onions. I liked it!

My Practical Takeaways for Halong Bay Cruise

I would recommend the day cruise if:

  • You are staying in Hanoi.
  • You have limited time.
  • You want to see the major Ha Long Bay attractions.
  • You want to visit a cave.
  • You want to see Ti Top Island.
  • You want a bamboo boat ride or kayaking experience.
  • You want lunch and activities included in one itinerary.
  • You don’t want to spend a night on the cruise.

Consider an overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise if:

  • You have more time.
  • You want a slower experience.
  • You want to spend more time on the water.
  • You want the cruise accommodation itself to be part of the experience.

Things I would carry for Halong Bay Cruise

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses or a hat
  • Swimming clothes if you plan to swim
  • Phone/camera
  • Some cash for additional purchases

Things I would keep in mind while visitng Halong Bay Cruise

  1. Don’t underestimate the Ti Top Island climb.
The viewpoint required around 450 steps in my experience, and I became breathless after climbing around 250 steps continuously.
  2. Keep track of time.
The island visit was limited, and the Ha Long Bay cruise had to continue according to schedule.
  3. Don’t assume everything is included.
I had to pay separately for drinking water.
  4. Expect a busy day.
The itinerary involved breakfast, cruising, a cave visit, Ti Top Island, lunch, a bamboo boat ride or kayaking, and a cooking class.
  5. Decide beforehand whether you want the beach or viewpoint at Ti Top Island.
With limited time, doing both can feel rushed.
  6. Check the food options if you are travelling with Indian travellers.
In my experience, Indian food options were available.
  7. If privacy matters, ask about a day-use room.
The Ha Long Bay cruise had private rooms available even for a day cruise.

Final Verdict

For me, the biggest advantage of the Ha Long Bay day cruise was that I could experience several different sides of the destination in one day: the limestone landscape from the cruise, Sung Sot Cave, the viewpoint at Ti Top Island, the beach, the bamboo boat ride, lunch, and the Vietnamese cooking activity.

I definitely enjoyed this activity, that was for sure! I chose the day trip. If I had planned an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, I would have enjoyed that too.
